Another era of Doctor Who is about to expire, as Jodie Whittaker will make her final appearance as the Thirteenth Doctor later this year. It was revealed in early May that Ncuti Gatwa, star of the television series Sex Education, will take over as the title Time Lord. However, it seems like Gatwa's Doctor won't be engaging in timey-wimey antics for quite some time, leaving Doctor Who fans with a long wait.

Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Special

Ncuti Gatwa is expected to start filming the upcoming season of Doctor Who in November, according to an online journal. The outlet speculates that this means the following regular season of Doctor Who, i.e. the first one with Gatwa's Doctor leading the charge, won't air until early 2024 at the earliest because of this shooting date and the Doctor Who 60th anniversary special that's scheduled to air in 2023. Gatwa will return as Eric Effiong in Sex Education Season 4 before beginning work on Doctor Who. A Netflix subscription is required to access the first three seasons.

The specials Eve of the Daleks and Legend of the Sea Devils featured Jodie Whittaker and her traveling companions, Mandip Gill's Yasmin Khan and John Bishop's Dan Lewis. The last season of Doctor Who, also known as Doctor Who: Flux, aired from October to December 2021.

Well-Known Characters Are Back!

The third special, which doesn't yet have a release date, is bringing back well-known characters including Sophie Aldred's Ace, Janet Fielding's Tegan Jovanka, Sacha Dawan's Ace, Jemma Redgrave's Kate Stewart, and Janet Fielding's Tegan Jovanka, who were both companions in the original Doctor Who era. Thus, the remainder of 2022 is taken care of, and Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who debut isn't anticipated until 2024. Still, as was already mentioned, this won't leave us without anything for 2023.

David Tennant and Catherine Tate will return to Doctor Who for its 60th anniversary. Since the 50th-anniversary special The Day of the Doctor, Tennant hasn't been on television in a Doctor Who episode. Tate last played Donna Noble in The End of Time, more than 10 years ago. In addition, Neil Patrick Harris will play "the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced" in this special, according to showrunner Russell T. Davies. Bernard Cribbins, who passed away in late July, will reprise his role as Donna's grandfather Wilfred Mott.

Yasmin Finney will also make an appearance as Rose. It's still unknown if we'll be seeing an untold story from the 10th Doctor's time, or if the Thirteenth Doctor might regenerate into the recognizable Tennant form.
