Ryan Murphy’s Ratched Isn’t Impressing Many Critics

‘American Horror Story’ fans were disappointed there wouldn’t be a season of the hit show this year, but they soon perked up when they saw the trailers for ‘Ratched.’ Starring Sarah Paulson as the titular character, Ratched follows the infamous nurse from the Jack Nicholson movie, ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.’ Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the critics are that impressed with the show.

Nurse Ratched

Those who have read the book or seen the movie will know that Nurse Ratched was a seriously cool character in ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.’ No, we don’t mean cool as in fun… We mean cool as in kind of scary. So, when Ryan Murphy announced that he would be making a TV series focusing just on her character, the whole world was excited. Especially as we have no ‘AHS’ to look forward to this year.

The Premise

‘Ratched’ is set before the nurse comes face to face with Jack Nicholson in the movie, in an effort to explain a little bit about why she is the way she is. While the 1975 classic film was dark and gritty, Ryan Murphy has added his usual flairs to the show with bright colors, epic costumes, and an all-star cast. In fact, fans were over the moon to learn that Sarah Paulson would be playing the main character.

The Reviews Are In

The show premiered on Netflix on September 18, 2020, and most people were keen to binge-watch the whole series. However, then the reviews came pouring in and it looks like most people were disappointed. Scathing reviews came pouring in, saying that ‘Ratched’ had lost the grittiness of the movie it was based upon. Some people even called it ‘absurd.’ While critics may not be huge fans, with a Metacritic score of just 49, it seems the average viewer enjoys it more. It has an IMDb score of 7.4 and 93% of Google reviewers like it.

What do you think, did you like Ratched?
